Men's Basketball Rallies Past UC Irvine for Third-Straight Victory

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team rallied back from a 17-point deficit to win its third-straight game, beating UC Irvine 73-59 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Senior Nick Dixon led UTRGV (6-6) with 23 points, five rebounds, four assists and a career-high tying four steals. Senior Dan Kimasa scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Freshman Javon Levi dished out a career-high seven assists and grabbed a career-high six rebounds while tying his career high with five points.
 
Max Hazzard led UC Irvine (4-8) with 16 points. Evan Leonard scored 14 points.
 
UC Irvine led 34-17 on a Brandon Smith layup at the 5:36 mark. Dixon answered by scoring the game's next nine points on a layup, a three-pointer and four free throws to bring UTRGV within 34-26.
 
Dixon ended the half with a free throw and then UTRGV scored the first six points of the second half to pull within 38-33.
 
After a pair of UC Irvine baskets, senior McAllen-native Moe McDonald made a layup and three free throws and then junior Johnny Crnogorac made a jumper to bring UTRGV within 42-40.
 
Then, with UTRGV down 44-42, UC Irvine scored eight-straight points to go up 52-45. UTRGV responded with a 10-0 run, tying the game on a Kimasa three-point play with 6:18 remaining.
 
After a pair of Leonard free throws, Dixon made two free throws and a jumper to give UTRGV a 56-54 lead. Crnogorac followed with a layup and then sophomore Lesley Varner Jr. converted a three-point play to complete the 9-0 run with UTRGV up 61-54.
 
UC Irvine pulled within six twice, including 65-59, but UTRGV scored the final eight points of the game.
 
In total, UTRGV outscored UC Irvine 56-25 over the final 25 and a half minutes.
 
UTRGV wraps up the home stand on Saturday at 7 p.m. against UT Arlington. Fans that donate a new, unwrapped toy will receive a free ticket. All toy donations will benefit local children in need. Current UTRGV students, who already receive free admission, will receive free popcorn with their donations. Doors open at 6.
