Women’s Tennis Looks to Stop Skid Against UTSA Sunday

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team looks to snap a six-match losing streak when they face off against the University of Texas at San Antonio on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-6) fell 0-7 at the hands of the University of Texas at Arlington on February 5.
 
UTA won on doubles courts two and three to take the doubles point. The duo of Dominique Esparza and Anastasia Belyaeva went back and forth on court one with Angeles de los Rios and Jessica Birowski as their match ended at three games apiece.
 
UTA clinched the match with singles victories on courts five, one and two.
 
Scouting UTSA
UTSA is 2-1 on the season after picking up wins over McNeese State and Incarnate Word. Their lone loss on the season comes at the hands of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on February 8.
 
M. Rosell Canudas leads UTSA with a 3-0 dual match record while playing all of her matches at the No. 1 spot. Canudas and Kylee Kato have teamed up in doubles to post a 3-0 record while also playing all their matches at the No. 1 spot.
 
Laura Cabrera, Kylee Kato and Charleen Tiwari each have won two singles matches on the season.
 
Denisa Ibrahimovic and Sonia Madroñal Medina are also undefeated in doubles after posting a 2-0 record at the No. 2 spot. Overall, UTSA is 6-1 in doubles.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 3-24 all-time against UTSA in a series that dates back to 1986 and have lost six in a row to them.
 
These two teams met up last season and it was UTSA who came away with the 5-2 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on February 28, 2016.
 
The last time UTRGV picked up a victory over UTSA came back on March 14, 2010 as the won 4-2 at the Cimarron Country Club in Mission.
 
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
 
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on February 19 when they travel to Kingsville to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 1 p.m.
