WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis program wrapped up their final day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional Saturday at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
Makesar, who represented UTRGV in the singles main draw round of 32 for the program's first time since 2018, fell in straight-sets to No. 9 seed,
Elena Mireles from SMU, 6-2, 6-2. Makesar ended her tournament with a 3-1 record after winning two matches in the qualifying draw to reach the singles main draw.
Two Vaqueros played in the consolation draw on Saturday, including sophomore
Mariangel Estrella who battled against
Alexia Puiac from Houston (UH). Puiac took a quick first set, winning 6-1, before Estrella bounced back with a dominant 6-2 victory in the second to force a deciding set. Puiac recovered to take the third set, 6-2.
Playing alongside Estrella was senior
Hitakamya Narwal in the consolation draw. Narwal faced off against
Yoana Konstantinova from Texas A&M (TAMU). The Aggies' Konstantinova and Narwal played some tough sets, but Konstantinova pulled away in both 6-3 to secure the win.
Junior
Juana Gomez Weiss was scheduled to face off against Baylor's
Kenna Erickson who withdrew prior to the match due to injury. In doubles play, Estrella and Makesar were scheduled to face off against Baylor's
Gavrielle Villegas and
Alian Zack but the pair withdrew due to injury.
The Vaqueros will now turn their attention to the Southland Conference (SLC) Fall Championships for a chance to send one singles player and one doubles team from each gender to advance to the 2026 ITA Conference Masters Championship.
