EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team fell to Rio Grande Valley FC 2-1 in a friendly on Monday at H-E-B Park.
Sophomore Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez scored UTRGV's lone goal, moving left past the goalkeeper and sending the ball into the far corner of the net at 54:55.
UTRGV had a few other opportunities, including in the 21
st minute, when sophomore
Isaiah Hinds was denied at point blank range, and in the 54
th minute, when freshman
Ilias Kosmidis' shot was deflected wide. The latter of those opportunities set up the first corner kick of the match. The header off the corner went wide, though.
RGV FC controlled the tempo over the first eight minutes, with freshman
Esa Aalto making a stop of an
Ivan Magalhaes free kick.
RGV FC broke through at 15:43 when
Kyle Murphy scored to make it 1-0.
Redshirt freshman New Mexico transfer
Andy Rios made his debut in goal in the second half, allowing an own goal at 48:15, but rebounding to make a save with his left foot on a one-on-one opportunity for RGV FC three minutes later.
Rios finished with three saves.
RGV FC outshot UTRGV 6-3.
Former UTRGV players
Juanito Garcia and
Alex Ochoa each saw action in the backfield for RGV FC in the second half. Garcia deflected a UTRGV shot opportunity in the 87
th minute.
UTRGV is back in action on March 25 at 1 p.m. when it hosts at alumni match at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
