EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team hit three triples in a row during a five-run third en route to an 11-4 opening night victory over Texas Southern University (TSU) on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
With the game tied at 1, UTRGV (1-0) put two on with nobody out against
Chris Suarez (0-1). Junior
Ivan Estrella hit the first triple with a line drive into the right-center gap. Freshman La Joya alum
Anibal Leal followed with a line drive down the right field line that went into the corner for the second triple. Senior
Austin Oakes capped the run with a liner into the right-center gap. He later scored on a wild pitch to put UTRGV up 6-1.
That was plenty for junior
Carter Johnson (1-0), who retired the first eight hitters he faced while pitching six innings and allowing three runs on two hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.
TSU's (0-1) only hits against him were an RBI-single by
Jose Cabreja in the third and a two-run home run by
Jose Camacho in the sixth.
UTRGV had another five-run inning in the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out to setup a two-run double by senior
Joseph Collazo. After a wild ptich scored a run, junior
Casey Danley hit a two-run home run down the left field line to put UTRGV up 11-3.
UTRGV started the scoring in the second. Freshman La Joya alum
Anibal Leal led off the inning with a 10-pitch walk, setting up a two-out RBI-single by sophomore
Conrad McMahon to make it 1-0.
TSU completed the scoring in the eighth on a two-out triple by
Gaudencio Lucca.
UTRGV and TSU continue this four-game series on Saturday at 12 p.m. with a doubleheader. Gates open at 11 am.
