EDINBURG – Senior
Jose Garcia hit for the cycle to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team past Texas Southern University (TSU) 12-2 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Garcia tripled in the first, doubled and scored in the third, singled and scored in the fourth, and hit a two-run home run, a no doubt shot to left and the first of his career, in the fifth. He then added a walk-off double in the seventh to finish 5-for-5
The double sparked a five-run third and was followed by an RBI-single by junior
Austin Siener, a run-scoring passed ball, and then, two batters later, a two-run triple by senior
Joseph Collazo and an RBI-single by junior
Noah Lee.
UTRGV (2-0) now has five different players with triples this year after having just four players hit triples in all of 2016.
The single followed a home run by junior
Casey Danley and was followed by singles from Siener and junior
Ivan Estrella to score a run. Two outs later, an error brought home another run to put UTRGV up 9-2.
The home run in the fifth put UTRGV up 11-2.
That was plenty for senior
Andrew Garcia (1-0), who allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out five in seven innings for his third-career complete game.
UTRGV started the scoring against TSU (0-2) starter
Anthony Martinez (0-1) in the second when freshman
Tyler Torres hit a two-out RBI-double to make it 1-0.
TSU got both of its runs in the third on a wild pitch and an RBI-single by
Jose Camacho.
UTRGV and TSU continue this four-game series at 3:30 p.m. with game two of this doubleheader.
