Men's Basketball Drops Offensive Clinic to New Mexico State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team tied its season-high in scoring in a 107-101 loss to four-time defending Western Athletic Conference Champion New Mexico State on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a season-best crowd of 2,234.
 
The 208 total points are the most for the program since Feb. 9, 2002 when there were 215 points scored in a 110-105 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
Junior Nick Dixon led UTRGV (10-18, 2-9 WAC) with 23 points while going 4-for-8 from the field and a career-best 15-for-16 from the line. He also had six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Sophomore Antonio Green scored 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-8 from behind the arc. He now ranks third in the NCAA with 104 three-pointers made. Sophomore Lew Stallworth scored 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Freshman Xavier McDaniel Jr. made a career-high tying three three-pointers en route to 12 points.
 
Ian Baker led NM State (23-4, 9-2 WAC) with 36 points, four rebounds and seven assists. Braxton Huggins went 8-for-12 from the field, inclduing 5-for-7 from behind the arc, while scoring 23 points. Jermerrio Jones scored 13 points with nine rebounds and five assists. Eli Chuha scored 17 points with seven rebounds.
 
NM State scored the first seven points of the game en route to a 9-2 lead, but junior Dan Kimasa hit a layup and two jumpers and Green made three-straight three-pointers to cap a 17-3 run that put UTRGV up 19-12 with 13:41 remaining in the first half.
 
NM State responded with a 17-3 run of its own to go up 29-22 three minutes later, but UTRGV answered with a 10-3 to tie the game at 32 on a pair of Dixon free throws at the 6:48 mark.
 
The game stayed close the rest of the way, with UTRGV never going down by more than nine and pulling within one on five occasions, incluiding 68-67 on a pair of Dixon free throws with 14:04 to go.
 
UTRGV was still within one posession at 85-83 on a McDaniel three four minutes later, but NM State scored the next seven points and kept its lead between five and nine the rest of the way.
 
UTRGV is back in action during the Challenge of the Deans against Seattle U on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in a game that will be teleivsed throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. Doors open at 6.
