Men's Basketball Falls to Seattle U

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Seattle U 86-77 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Junior Nick Dixon led UTRGV (10-19, 2-10 WAC) with 18 points. Sophomore Antonio Green scored 13 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers. Junior McAllen-native Moe McDonald scored a season-high 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a career-high tying 3-of-8 from behind the arc, with a career-high tying four assists.
 
Zachary Moore led Seattle U (13-14, 5-7 WAC) with 19 points, four rebounds and three steals. Brendan Westendorf scored 19 points with five assists. Matej Kavas finished with 13 points while Emmanuel Chibuowgu finished with 12.
 
Seattle U jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the opening minute and a half. Sophomore Walter Jones responded with a layup as UTRGV went on a 13-0 run to take the lead five and a half minutes later.
 
Chibuogwu, Kavas and Scott Ulaneo followed with three-pointers to give Seattle U the lead, but Dixon hit two free throws and junior Dan Kimasa made a layup to tie the game at 17.
 
Moore hit five free throws to help Seattle U scored nine-straight points as part of a 12-2 run to go up 29-19.
 
Seattle U took its largest lead of the half with 3:12 remaining when a Westendorf three made it 34-22.
 
UTRGV closed the half on an 8-2 run and climbed to within five at 42-37 on a McDonald layup early in the second half.
 
Then, after Seattle U pushed its lead to 50-40 on a William Powell three-point play, McDonald made a three to spark a 10-3 run to bring UTRGV within 53-50.
 
UTRGV got as close as two at 56-54 on a Green three at the 11:07 mark, but Seattle U scored scored the next 10 points as part of a 16-2 run to go up 72-56.
 
With five minutes left, Dixon hit five free throws, Green made a jumper and a three, and Dixon knocked down a layup to bring UTRGV within 74-71, but Seattle U followed with a 12-3 run to push the game out of reach.
 
UTRGV plays its final home game of the season on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Utah Valley at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in a game that will be teleivsed throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. It's the homecoming game, and the evening begins with a free tailgate party and barbeque cook-off at 5, followed by the burning of the letters at 6:30 in Parking Lot F outside the fieldhouse. UTRGV Athletics will honor the 2017 Athletics Hall of Fame Class at halftime. This year's class includes the 1980-81 men's basketball that advanced to the NIT team and its top player, former NBA player Kenneth "Apple" Green, baseball players Jack Ewing and Jim Proctor, women's basketball player Becky (Dube) Thomas, and women's tennis player Ellen Nelissen. Doors open at 6.
