EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team is off to an 8-0 start for the first time since 2012 after completing the four-game sweep of Prairie View A&M (PVAM) with an 11-0, seven-inning victory to close out the Al Ogletree Classic on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
Senior Eddie Delgado (1-0) continued a run of great pitching for UTRGV, pitching his first complete game and shutout by striking out six in a career-high seven innings of work. He scattered five hits (four singles) while walking two and throwing 56 of his 82 pitches (68.3 percent) for strikes.
 
Junior Ivan Estrella led UTRGV offensively, going 3-for-4 with his first home run, five RBI and two runs scored.
 
PVAM (1-8) starter Jordan Johnson (0-1) struck out four of the first five UTRGV hitters he faced, but UTRGV broke through in the third, loading the bases with two outs before scoring a run on a balk and two on an Estrella single.
 
That was it until the sixth, an inning which Estrella started with a single. UTRGV went on to load the bases with nobody out to set-up a two-run double by freshman La Joya alum Anibal Leal. Freshman Tyler Torres followed with a sacrifice fly. One out later, UTRGV reloaded the bases with back-to-back walks to set-up a two-run single by senior Joseph Collazo. Estrella followed with a three-run blast over the left field wall to cap the eight-run inning.
 
UTRGV is back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when it visits No. 25 Houston.
