EDINBURG – In its first-ever match against a Major League Soccer club, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team fell to the Houston Dynamo 5-0 in a 60-minute friendly on Saturday at H-E-B Park.
The Dynamo played its first team in the first half and its second team in the second half.
UTRGV had an impressive defensive stop in the sixth minute when freshman
Michael Faber forced
Mauro Manotas wide of the net.
Six minutes later, though, Manotas refused to be denied when he slid to finish a cross from
Romell Quioto, putting the Dynamo up 1-0.
The Dynamo scored again in the 22
nd minute when
Alberth Elis came down the right side and sent a cross to
Alex who finished to make it 2-0.
That was it until the 50
th minute, when
Erick Torres picked up a loose ball in a scrum on the edge of the box before scoring to make it 3-0.
Two minutes later,
Andrew Wenger fired a corner kick into the box for
Angus who finished to make it 4-0.
Torres added another goal in the 59
th minute on a sliding ball from
Vicente Sánchez to complete the scoring.
"This was a valuable experience for us as we got to measure our players against the professional standard," UTRGV head coach
Paul Leese said. "We played well and competed right with them, but the professional ability to punish our mistakes was very evident. Overall, though, it was a great learning experience."
