Women’s Tennis Set to Face UT Arlington on Sunday

ARLINGTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team is set to face off against the University of Texas at Arlington on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-5) fell 0-7 on the road to Southern Methodist University on Saturday.
 
SMU got off to a quick start as they won their doubles matches on courts two and three. UTRGV's duo of Dominique Esparza and Anastasia Belyaeva led in their match on court one versus Liza Buss and Dasha Sharapova before it went unfinished.
 
SMU did not drop a set as they swept through singles to put the match away.
 
Scouting UT Arlington
UT Arlington is 1-3 on the early part of the season. They opened with a 4-2 win over the University of Houston on January 21.
 
They then lost three in a row as they lost to Michigan State, UTEP and Princeton.
 
UTA returns six from last season's squad including seniors Jessica Birowski, Angeles de los Rios and Astrid Gehre. De los Rios went 24-6 in singles last season and 18-7 in doubles while Birowski went 16-11 in singles last year while also going 15-12 in doubles.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 2-7 all-time against UT Arlington in a series that dates back to 1990.
 
The last time these two teams met was back on February 14, 2015 when UTA came away with a 7-0 win in a neutral site in San Antonio.
 
The last time UTRGV defeated UTA came back on April 6, 2008 when they picked up a 7-0 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
 
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on February 12 when they head to San Antonio to face the University of Texas San Antonio at the UTSA Tennis Center.
