LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team kicks off their first Western Athletic Conference cluster as they face Chicago State on Friday at the NM State Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-11) fell 2-5 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road as they closed out their regular season series.
UTRGV got an early lead as they picked up the doubles point. They fell on court three but rallied on courts one and two.
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra defeated Jelena Dzinic and Judit Vives 7-6 and then it was
Dominique Esparza and
Anastasia Belyaeva who picked up the 6-4 win over Louise Trigona and Marina Vicens Miguel on court two.
In singles, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won on all courts except court four as Ibarra defeated Maria Maldonado 6-2, 7-5.
Scouting Chicago State
Chicago State is 4-11 on the season and is currently on a four-match losing streak after falling 1-6 to Eastern Michigan on March 11.
This season they have defeated Minnesota Duluth, Elmhurst, Green Bay and McKendree College.
Mariya Kostyuk has paced Chicago State this season in singles. She has posted eight singles victories while playing at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
Carynne Lloyd has posted seven singles victories while Hanna Pangestu has recorded six singles victories on the year.
In doubles, Lloyd and Lorea Gamboa lead the team with five doubles victories while playing at all three spots. Kostyuk and Leshia Gadacz have won four while Kostyuk has team with Gadacz to win three matches.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 5-2 all-time in a series that dates back to 2009.
These two teams met last season and it was UTRGV who came away with the 7-0 win in Phoenix.
The last Chicago State picked up a win over UTRGV cam eon April 22, 2012 as Chicago State closed out the Great West Conference.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
