LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team snapped its 11-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Chicago State on Friday at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (2-11, 1-0 WAC) fell behind early in doubles as Chicago State (4-12, 0-1 WAC) won on court three but it was the duo of junior Dominique Esparza and freshman Anastasia Belyaeva who evened doubles play with a 6-4 victory over Hanna Pangestu and Leshia Gadacz on court two.
 
Freshman Marine Darzyan and sophomore Dominique Ibarra then clinched the doubles point for UTRGV after they defeated Carynne Lloyd and Lorea Gamboa 6-2 on court one.
 
Chicago State tied things up in singles after they got a win on court six. Belyaeva won straight sets over Lorena Gamboa 6-0, 6-3 to give UTRGV 2-1 but Chicago State won on court one to once again tie the match.
 
Ibarra answered with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court four over Lloyd to make it 3-2 UTRGV. Ibarra has now won five straight matches and improves to 7-5 on the season. Freshman Chloe Leclere then clinched the match for UTRGV after going three sets with Pangestu on court five. Leclere opened with a 4-6 loss in the first set before bouncing back with 6-2, 6-4 win in the second and third.
 
Darzyan closed out the scoring for UTRGV as she picked up a three-set win over Gadacz on court three. After opening her match with a 6-2 win in the first set, she fell 4-6 in the second before closing out with a 6-1 win in the third.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday when they face Seattle U at 3 p.m. in its second match of the WAC cluster at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.
