Women’s Tennis to Face Seattle U Saturday in WAC Cluster

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team to face Seattle University on Saturday in their second match of the WAC cluster at the NM State Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (2-11) picked up their first conference win of the season as they snapped an 11-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over Chicago State.
 
UTRGV took two out of three doubles matches to jump out to the early lead but it was Chicago State who answered right away in singles as they won on court six.
 
Anastasia Belyaeva answered that with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lorena Gamboa on court two. After Chicago State won on court one, UTRGV closed out the match with wins from Dominique Ibarra, Chloe Leclere and Marine Darzyan to clinch the match.
 
Scouting Seattle U
Seattle U is 7-7 on the season and is coming off of a 7-0 win over George Fox on March 11. They are scheduled to face New Mexico State earlier this afternoon.
 
Seattle U has wins over Weber State, Eastern Washington, UC Irvine, Whitman College, San Diego Christian College and George Fox.
 
Caroline Maltby leads Seattle U in dual match play with a 10-3 singles record while playing multiple spots in the lineup. Michelle Lui has posted a 7-6 record in singles while playing all of her matches at the No. 1 spot.
 
In doubles, Lui and Madison Maloney have teamed up for six doubles victories while Barbara Carey and Kali McCollister have also added six wins. As a team, Seattle U is 21-18 in doubles.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 3-2 all-time against Seattle U in a series that dates back to 2009.
 
These two teams met last year as UTRGV picked up the 4-3 win over Seattle U back on April 2, 2016 in Chicago.
 
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
 
Next Up
UTRGV will wrap up their first WAC cluster on Sunday when they face New Mexico State at 1 p.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
