AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team fell to Texas, a team receiving votes in the latest national polls, 9-7 on Wednesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
UTRGV (16-8) lead 7-0 out of the gate, knokcing out Texas (14-10) starter
Connor Mayes after just a third of an inning. Senior
Jose Garcia started the inning with a home run and capped it with an RBI-single. In-between, UTRGV drew four walks, including two with the bases loaded, and got an RBI-double from junior
Austin Siener and a two-run single from sophomore
Conrad McMahon.
Garcia went 3-for-5 while McMahon finished 2-for-4.
Texas responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a
Bret Boswell home run, and four in the second on a
Ryan Reynolds home run and RBI-singles by
Tate Shaw and Boswell.
That was it until the fifth, when an
Austin Todd sacrifice fly and an error allowed Texas to take an 8-7 lead against freshman Sharyland alum
David Becerra (1-1).
That made a winner of
Jon Malmin (1-0), who struck out seven in 6.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Beau Ridgeway struck out four over two scoreless innings for his third save.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when it opens Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play against defending WAC Tournament Champion Utah Valley at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game that will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive UTRGV keychains. Gates open at 6.
