EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team was swept at the hands of Utah Valley University (UVU) after falling 4-1 in 10 innings on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Tied at one in the top of the 10
th inning, UVU (8-15, 3-0 WAC) got three runs against senior right-hander
Austin Douglas (2-1). After a walk to Trevor Howell, Zac Willis hit a two-run home run to give UVU the lead. They added one more run on an RBI single by Justin Erlandson to make it 4-1.
Patrick Wolfe (1-1) picked up the win after pitching an inning and a third while not allowing a run.
UTRGV (16-11, 0-3 WAC) took advantage a couple of errors in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. After a fielding error allowed junior
Conrad McMahon to reach, he then took second an arrant throw from the pitcher. With two outs in the inning, junior
Austin Siener hit an RBI single scoring McMahon for the 1-0 lead.
UVU answered against UTRGV starter
Andrew Garcia. A leadoff walk to Jake Berry followed by a double by Justin Erlandson put runners at second and third. One out later, Kade Poulsen drove in Berry with an RBI groundout to tie the game at one.
That would be all Garcia would allow after pitching eight innings and striking out six while getting the no-decision.
UTRGV will kick off nine straight games on the road when they face the No. 3 Texas Christian University on Tuesday at the Charlie and Marie Lupton Baseball Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
