KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team wraps up Western Athletic Conference play when they face off against Grand Canyon University at the Plaza Tennis Center on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (3-13, 2-2 WAC) fell 1-6 to UMKC on Friday.
UTRGV did manage to win one doubles match as
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra won on court one but with one player down UTRGV dropped the final two doubles matches and the point.
In singles,
Dominique Esparza won on court two but it was UMKC who won the rest of the matches to take the win.
Scouting Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon is 8-5 on the season and 2-0 in WAC play. They are currently riding a three-match win streak after beating Chicago State, Seattle U and Idaho State.
Emilia Occhipinti leads GCU with a 12-0 record in singles while playing most of her matches at the No. 6 spot. Celina Buhr has posted a 10-2 record while playing all of her matches at the No. 4 spot and Susan Baklini has posted a 9-3 record at the No. 3 spot.
In doubles, GCU has posted a 24-12 record as a team while the team of Occhipinti and Lana Rinaldi have posted eight doubles victories, the most on the team. Balkini and Tatu Prudhomme have the second most wins with a 7-5 record.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 0-3 against Grand Canyon all-time in a series that dates back to 2014.
UTRGV fell 1-6 last season in their lone match up of the year in Chicago.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.

UTRGV will close out their home portion of their schedule when they host Laredo Community College on April 7 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
