EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team clinched a series victory over Lamar by winning game two of a doubleheader 6-5 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV (10-2) took two out of three from Lamar (7-5), marking UTRGV's third-straight weekend series victory.
UTRGV trailed 1-0 in the third, but after sophomore
Conrad McMahon drew a leadoff walk, senior
Jose Garcia doubled to the left-center field wall to tie the game. One batter later, junior
Ivan Estrella hit an RBI-double. Then, after a single by freshman La Joya alum
Anibal Leal, senior
Joseph Collazo hit into a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.
Estrella finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Garcia went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two intentional walks.
Down 5-3 in the seventh, UTRGV put runners on second and third with nobody out against
Jimmy Johnson (0-2). Junior
Cris Castillo hit a sacrifice fly, and then one batter later, freshman
Tyler Torres hit an RBI-single and senior
Victor Garcia Jr. hit an RBI-double to give UTRGV a 6-5 lead.
That made a winner of senior
Austin Douglas (2-0), who struck out four in 2.1 innings of relief.
Sophomore Brownsville Veterans alum
Luis Acosta struck out three batters in an 1.2 innings of hitless relief for his second save.
Lamar scored all of its runs on home runs, with
Trey Silvers and
Payton Robertson hitting solo shots in the first and sixth innings, respectively, and
Reid Russell adding a three-run shot in the seventh.
UTRGV is back in action on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. when it visits No. 11 Texas A&M for the first of two in a game that will be televised on SEC Network Plus.
