Home Winning Streak Halted as Baseball Drops Game One of Doubleheader

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team's 10-game home winning streak came to an end in a 5-1 loss to Lamar in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Lamar (7-4) scored single runs in each of the first three innings on a fielder's choice, an RBI-single by Cutter McDowell against graduate student Connor Grant (2-2), and a bases loaded walk by Phil Ingram against junior Harlingen South alum Zach Martinez.

Senior Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron took over from there, pitching a season-high 4.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts. The only blemish was a Trey Silvers home run in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, UTRGV (9-2) broke through against Carson Lance (3-0) by scoring a run on a bases loaded walk by senior Victor Garcia Jr.

Lance went 5.2 innings, striking out six while allowing one hit and six walks. The lone hit was a double by junior Ivan Estrella in the fourth.

Lamar added a run on a passed ball in the ninth.

Galen Andrews pitched two scoreless innings for his first save.

UTRGV and Lamar complete this three-game series with game two of the doubleheader at approximately 4:15 p.m.
