KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team closed out their conference schedule with a tough 3-4 loss to Grand Canyon University on Saturday at the Carriage Club.
UTRGV (3-14, 2-3 WAC) played one player short which put them behind in doubles from the start. Grand Canyon won on court two to win the point but UTRGV did come away with a win on court one as the team of
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra beat Tatu Prudhomme and Susan Baklini 7-6.
In singles, Grand Canyon got two more points with a win on courts six and five but UTRGV answered in a big way.
Anastasia Belyaeva got them on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Prudhomme on court one.
Ibarra then followed with a win on court three over Baklini. She dropped the first set 6-7 but rallied with a 6-3 win in the second and a 6-1 win in the third and final set.
Dominique Esparza tied the match with a win over Alexandra Petrzalkova on court two. After falling in the first set 2-6, Esparza won 6-1 in the second and 7-6 in the third.
Grand Canyon came away with a win on court four to put the match away.
UTRGV will return home to face Laredo Community College on April 7 at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
