BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team clinched a series victory over CSU Bakersfield (CSUB) by winning 4-2 on Sunday at Hardt Field to take two out of three.
With the game tied at 2 after five innings, junior
Austin Siener gave UTRGV (18-14, 2-4 WAC) the lead with a leadoff home run in the sixth against
Isaiah Moten (2-3).
Sophomore
Conrad McMahon drove-in a run with a two-out single in the seventh to give UTRGV some insurance.
Siener finished 3-for-4 while McMahon went 2-for-4. Junior
Ivan Estrella went 2-for-3 while freshman
Tyler Torres went 2-for-4.
That made a winner of senior
Andrew Garcia (3-1), who struck out two in six innings.
CSUB (12-11, 1-5 WAC) scored its only runs in the fifth on a
Max Carter sacrifice fly and a
Ryan Grotjohn groundout.
Junior
Josh Witherspoon pitched three scoreless innings for his first save.
UTRGV broke through in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by senior
Jose Garcia.
Estrella added an RBI-double in the fifth to make it 2-0.
David Metzgar and
Andrew Penner each went 3-for-4 for CSUB.
UTRGV is back in action on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. when it visits Texas State, a team receiving votes in the latest polls.
