PHOENIX, Ariz. –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team scored all of its runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game before falling to Grand Canyon University (GCU) 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday at Brazell Stadium.
Down 3-0 after six, UTRGV got its second hit of the game with one out in the seventh when junior
Ivan Estrella doubled. One out later, freshman
Tyler Torres singled to left to bring UTRGV (21-21, 4-10 WAC) within 3-1.
After GCU (18-19, 12-2 WAC) got that run back in the bottom of the inning, senior
Joseph Collazo hit a two-run single and sophomore
Anthony Gomez reached on an error to tie the game in the eighth.
That was it until the 10
th, when
Griffin Barnes led off with a double against graduate student
Connor Grant (5-5). After a sacrifice bunt moved the winning run to third base, UTRGV intentionally walked
Austin Bull before
Tom Lerouge hit a walk-off single.
That made a winner of
Bobby Milacki (1-2), who struck out two in a hitless 10
th.
After senior
Andrew Garcia struck out three over two scoreless innings to start the game, GCU loaded the bases with one out in the third, setting up an
Ian Evans sacrifice fly and a two-run single by
Garrison Schwartz to make it 3-0.
Schwartz came up with another run-scoring single in the seventh en route to finishing 3-for-4 with a walk.
Sophomore
Conrad McMahon had a multi-hit game for UTRGV, going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
UTRGV and GCU close out this three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
