PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team fell to Grand Canyon University (GCU) in 10 innings for the second-straight game, 9-8 on Sunday at Brazell Stadium.
UTRGV (21-22, 4-11 WAC) ignited its offense in the second on a two-run home run by senior
Victor Garcia Jr. and an RBI-single by senior
Joseph Collazo against
Jack Schneider. UTRGV loaded the bases with two outs to knock out Schneider, and then junior
Ivan Estrella greeted reliever
Gabe Benavides with a grand slam to cap the inning with the score 7-0.
It was UTRGV's fifth multi-home run game of the season.
Estrella added an RBI-double in the fourth to finished 2-for-4 with a career-high tying five RBI. Junior
Austin Siener also went 2-for-4 while Collazo and sophomore
Anthony Gomez each finished 2-for-5. Freshman
Tyler Torres went a career-high tying 3-for-5.
Sophomore Brownsville Veterans alum
Luis Acosta started and pitched a career-high five innings, striking out two. He started the game by allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings before allowing six runs on six hits at the start of the sixth.
GCU (19-19, 13-2 WAC) started the scoring with RBI-singles by
Tom Lerouge and
Preston Pavlica and an RBI-double by
Garrison Schwartz before
Ian Evans capped the inning with a three-run home run to make it 8-6.
The bullpen took over from there, with freshman
Austin Gussman and junior
Josh Witherspoon each tossing a hitless inning.
In the eighth, however, an Evans sacrifice fly and a
Zach Malis RBI-single allowed GCU to tie the game against graduate student
Connor Grant (5-6).
Then, in the 10
th, Pavlica hit a leadoff double before Schwartz hit a walk-off single.
That made a winner of
A.J. Franks (4-0), who pitched two scoreless innings.
UTRGV is back in action on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. when it visits Incarnate Word.
