SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team closed out a stretch of 14 out of 17 on the road with a 6-4 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) on Wednesday at Sullivan Field.
Sophomore
Conrad McMahon led UTRGV (22-22) by going a career-high tying 3-for-5 with a career-high three runs scored. Sophomore
Anthony Gomez recorded his first-career multi-double game while going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman
Tyler Torres went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Senior
Jose Garcia also finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
UTRGV broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh against
Tyler Miller (1-2), when with runners at second and third and one out, senior
Joseph Collazo laid down a squeeze. Torres scored and then McMahon came home on the throw to make it 5-3.
That made a winner of junior
George Lamb (3-1), who pitched a career-high tying 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three.
UIW (17-25) scored an unearned run in the seventh, but UTRGV got that run back on a Collazo single in the ninth.
Graduate student
Connor Grant pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
UIW led 2-0 in the first on a
Kyle Bergeron single and a
Lee Thomas sacrifice fly.
UTRGV tied the game in the third when, with the bases loaded and one out,
Austin Siener hit a two-run single.
UTRGV took the lead in the fourth on an RBI-fielder's choice Torres.
UIW tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the inning when
Bryce Shepherd hit into a fielder's choice.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when it kicks off a seven-game home stand with the first of three against Chicago State at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The game will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports channel 323.
It's Health Day, which is intended to promote wellness in the Rio Grande Valley with various health & fitness stations at which fans can participate. The first 200 fans to complete the Health Day stations will receive UTRGV water bottles. Stations include health and nutritional information, outdoor games, growth charts and boxing demos. Health Day partners include Neighbors Emergency Center, UTRGV Health & Kinesiology, the UTRGV School of Medicine, 9Round Fitness, PUMP Advanced Nutrition, and University Recreation.
