EDINBURG – Junior Carter Johnson carried a no-hitter into the eighth to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team to a 7-1 victory over Chicago State University (CSU) on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Johnson (5-4) retired the first 11 batters he faced before issuing a two-out walk in the fourth. Johnson also issued walks in the fifth and sixth innings before tossing a perfect seventh.

In the eighth, however, Sanford Hunt hit a liner to right that ricocheted off the glove of a diving junior Austin Siener for CSU's (9-30, 5-9 WAC) first hit. Two batters later, with Hunt at third and two outs, Zach Thomas hit a chopper up the middle. Junior Ivan Estrella snared the ball behind the second base bag, but Thomas beat the throw to give CSU its run.

Johnson ended up pitching his second complete game of the season, striking out 12 while allowing three hits and five walks in nine innings.

UTRGV (24-22, 6-11 WAC) gave Johnson all the runs he needed in the first when junior Ivan Estrella launched a three-run home run off Brad Moore (2-6).

Estrella is now 5-for-13 (.385) with three home runs and 13 RBI over his last three WAC games.

UTRGV added a run in the fourth on a squeeze by junior Noah Lee before putting the game away in the fifth on a Lee single and a two-run single by senior Victor Garcia Jr.
