Baseball Drops Series Finale to Chicago State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game series to Chicago State University (CSU) 12-5 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

UTRGV (24-23, 6-12 WAC) led 1-0 after the first courtesy of an RBI-single by junior Ivan Estrella. UTRGV was also within 3-2 in the third after an RBI-groundout by senior Joseph Collazo.

Grant Trower (2-4) settled down from there, retiring 10-straight from the end of the third through the end of the sixth.

In the seventh, however, senior Jose Garcia and junior Noah Lee led off with singles. One out later, sophomore Conrad McMahon singled to left to bring UTRGV within 9-3.

Trower ended up going eight innings, striking out four while walking three and allowing five hits.

Up 3-2, CSU (10-30, 6-9 WAC) pushed the game out of reach in the sixth by plating five runs. CSU loaded the bases with one out, setting up an RBI-single by Rick Salazar. Then, after Jacob Northrup was plunked to force-in a run, Zach Thomas hit a two-run double. A wild pitch scored the final run of the inning to make It 8-2.

CSU added runs in the seventh on a Cody Freund single, the eighth on a Sanford Hunt single and a Salazar walk, and the ninth on a Matt Paciello groundout.

UTRGV added two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a single by freshman Lucas Jensen and a bases loaded walk by Estrella.

CSU got on the board for the first time in the second against sophomore Brownsville Veterans alum Luis Acosta (0-2) on an RBI-groundout by Freund to tie the game at 1.

In the third, Jacob Vanitvelt hit into a fielder's choice to drive-in a run. He then got caught in a rundown with two outs to allow Thomas to steal home to make it 3-2.
