EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's soccer team closed out its spring schedule with a 2-2 draw against St. Mary's University on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Much of the first half remained scoreless until St. Mary's Reis Woolley with the first tally on the board with about two and a half minutes left to play in the half. Wooley took a cross pass on the left side of the box and put a header into the goal for the 1-0 lead.
UTRGV didn't waste much time in the second half to tie the match up.
Sami Tiittanen got one passed the goalie from the top of the box 3:01 into the second halt to tie the match at one.
Later in the second half
Isidro Martinez gave UTRGV the 2-1 lead with a goal on a penalty kick with 37:10 left in the match to take the 2-1 lead.
St. Mary's rallied with 52 seconds left in the match as Arturo Sanchez put one in the goal from the right side of the box to the tie the match at two.
At halftime, the UTRGV Student Athletic Advisory Committee dedicated the match to McAllen Memorial High School senior Brianna Fernandez, who is battling Ependymoma, a rare type of primary brain tumor. UTRGV women's soccer team also presented her with a UTRGV soccer jersey.
