EDINBURG – Junior
Cris Castillo came up with a walk-off sacrifice fly to send The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team to a 6-5 victory over the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV (26-25, 7-14 WAC) trailed 5-1 entering the sixth when Castillo hit an RBI-single and sophomore
Anthony Gomez hit a two-run single.
UTRGV tied the game in the seventh on a groundout by freshman
Tyler Torres.
In the ninth, junior
Austin Siener led off with a single and stole second against
Anthony Brady (0-2). Senior
Victor Garcia Jr. walked and then junior
Isaac Gonzalez laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Brady couldn't make the play, loading the bases. Castillo followed with a fly ball to center and Siener beat the throw to the plate to end the game.
That made a winner of graduate student
Connor Grant (7-7), who pitched a scoreless ninth.
Senior
Joseph Collazo led UTRGV by going 3-for-5. Gomez finished 2-for-5 while Siener went 2-for-4 with a walk, a career-high three stolen bases and two runs scored.
UTRGV took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a safety squeeze by Torres.
UNC (18-28, 7-14 WAC) scored all of its runs with two outs in the fifth after an error extended the inning.
Tyler Yamaguchi came up with an RBI-fielder's choice before back-to-back run-scoring singles by
Nick Tanner and
Alex Kiel. One batter later,
Cole Maltese hit a two-run single to cap the inning.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 8 p.m. when it opens a three-game series at Sacramento State.
