SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team fell to Sacramento State 6-4 on Thursday at John Smith Field.
Three UTRGV (26-26, 7-15 WAC) players had two hits, including junior
Cris Castillo, who scored two runs, and sophomore
Conrad McMahon and senior
Joseph Collazo, who each scored once. Collazo also had a double and an RBI.
With UTRGV down 1-0 in the third, sophomore
Anthony Gomez hit a two-run single and then senior
Jose Garcia followed with an RBI-groundout.
Sacramento State (26-27, 10-12 WAC) tied the game in the fourth on a
PJ Floyd two-run single, but UTRGV regained the lead when Collazo doubled home Castillo in the seventh.
Sacramento State tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the inning on a
Vinny Esposito RBI-single.
In the eighth, Sacramento State put runners on the corners with one outa against graduate student
Connor Grant (7-8), setting up the go-ahead single by
Trent Goodrich. After an error put runners at second and third,
Josh Outman hit into a fielder's choice to complete the scoring.
That made a winner of
Tanner Olson (4-3), who pitched a perfect eighth.
Austin Root pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Sacramento State took a 1-0 lead in the second when
Devin Lehman hit into a double play to score Outman.
UTRGV and Sacramento State play the middle game of this series on Friday at 8 p.m.
