EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 1-1 double overtime tie against St. Bonaventure during day one of the Rio Grande Valley Invitational on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (0-0-1) got on the board at 64:11 on a long shot by junior Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez from the upper right-hand corner of the box.
St. Bonaventure (2-0-1) tied the match in the final minute when a
Kieran Toland free kick from the upper right-hand corner of the box led to a header by
Paul Afful.
Sophomore
Andy Rios (0-0-1) made three saves for UTRGV.
Luke Iacobellis (2-0-1) made six saves for St. Bonaventure.
UTRGV outshot St. Bonaventure 17-12, including 7-4 on net.
UTRGV closes out the tournament on Sunday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Omaha.
Houston Baptist faces St. Bonaventure in the first match of the day at 4.
The Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Drive continues with the Food Bank RGV, which is working with H-E-B to handle collection and distribution, encouraging the donation of:
•Bottled Water
•Peanut Butter
•Easy Open Tuna
•Potted Meat
•Vienna Sausages
•Paper Towels
•Toilet Paper
Fans donating at least five individual non-perishable food items at will receive free admission.
Current UTRGV students, who already receive free admission, will receive Orange Out for Hunger Action Month T-shirts while supplies last.
All fans are encouraged to wear orange to show support for disaster relief efforts.
