DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team won the NIU Adidas Invitational Championship by beating host Northern Illinois University (NIU) 2-0 on Sunday at the NIU Soccer Complex.
Freshman
Guillermo Martinez came up with his first-career goal, the game-winner, in the 70
th minute when he broke through a scrum in the box following a corner kick by junior Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez to send the ball into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, sophomore
Sergio Loredo Jr. sent a cross to his left to allow sophomore
Ilias Kosmidis to score from five yards out.
Sophomore
Andy Rios (2-1-1) recorded his second-straight shutout, making four saves.
Drew Donnally (2-2-0) finished with six saves for NIU (2-3-0).
The shots were even at 12 apiece, but UTRGV (2-1-1) had the edge in shots on goal, 8-4.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Our Lady of the Lake at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Gates open at 6.
