Men's Basketball Drops Overtime Thriller to Seattle U

EDINBURG – In a game that was separated by no more than one possession for all but 56 seconds of the final 25:04, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Seattle U 79-76 in overtime on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Freshman Greg Bowie led UTRGV (10-11, 2-3 WAC) with a career-high 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, and four rebounds. Senior Nick Dixon scored 17 points with three steals. Senior McAllen-native Moe McDonald scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
 
Aaron Menzies led Seattle U (14-8, 3-2 WAC) with 21 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and three assists. Matej Kavas scored 19 points with four rebounds and two steals. Jordan Hill scored 16 points with eight rebounds.
 
UTRGV trailed by as much as 11 at 23-12 with 8:49 remaining in the first half. UTRGV hit five of its next eight shots to go on a 13-5 run and pull within 28-25 on a Bowie jumper.
 
Seattle U pushed its lead back to five on a Richaud Gittens three before senior Mike Hoffman hit a jumper with four seconds left in the first half to bring UTRGV within 37-34.
 
UTRGV stayed within one possession until the 14:36 mark of the second half, when a Scott Ulaneo free throw put Seattle U up 46-42.
 
Dixon followed with a layup and a jumper, Bowie knocked down a three, and then Dixon hit a free throw to give UTRGV a 50-46 lead with 11:42 remaining.
 
Seattle U regained the lead on a Hill jumper that made the score 57-56, but McDonald immediately followed with a pair of free throws to give UTRGV the lead.
 
Then, with UTRGV up 62-59 after a Bowie jumper, a Menzies layup sparked an 8-0 run to put Seattle U up 67-62.
 
UTRGV scored nine of the next 11 points, capped by a deep three by junior Lew Stallworth, to take a 71-69 lead with 46 seconds left. On the next possession, however, Menzies made a layup to tie the game and force overtime.
 
Dixon knocked down a three at the start of overtime to give UTRGV a 74-71 lead, and the game was tied at 76 with 2:33 left after a pair of free throws by Terry Winn midway through the period, but a Kavas jumper gave Seattle U the lead for good.
 
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Chicago State.
