EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team opens its home portion of its schedule when it hosts Prairie View A&M University and Texas A&M Kingsville on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
UTRGV will face Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m. and then will face Texas A&M Kingsville after the conclusion of the men's match against Prairie View A&M. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend. Gates open at 8 a.m.
Last Time Out
UTRGV is coming off of a 0-4 loss to No. 12 Texas back on January 20 in Austin.
In doubles, Texas (2-0) took courts two and three to clinch the point. The match between UTRGV's (0-2) duo of juniors Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra and Texas' Petra Granic and Anna Turati went unfinished with the doubles point decided.
Texas followed doubles with wins on singles courts three, one and two to clinch the victory with the matches on the rest of the courts going unfinished.
Scouting Prairie View A&M
Prairie View A&M is 0-3 on the season and is coming off of a 0-7 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at home on Wednesday.
They have faced Texas A&M and Sam Houston State this season as they fell 0-7 and 1-6 respectively.
Jessica Lackey earned the lone point of the season for Prairie View A&M after defeating Sam Houston State's Rosalie Gerritsen 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles, Constanza Aranguiz and Neharika Rama picked up the team's only victory on the season after beating Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic 6-4.
Scouting Texas A&M Kingsville
This will be the first match of the season for Texas A&M Kingsville.
Texas A&M Kingsville returns seven from last year's squad including, Lisa Carvajal who is a native of McAllen.
In the fall, Laura Montalvo led the team with a 6-1 record in singles as the team went 35-23 in singles during the fall tournament season.
In doubles, Vic Romanovskaia and Valerie Ruiz paced the team with a 4-5 record while the team only used four different doubles teams.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 15-1 all-time against Prairie View A&M in a series that dates back to 1986.
Both of these teams met last season as UTRGV took the 5-2 win in a neutral match in Huntsville.
UTRGV has won six straight matches against Prairie View A&M.
UTRGV is 9-1 all-time against Texas A&M Kingsville in a series that dates back to 1988.
Both teams met up last year and it was Texas A&M Kingsville who came away with the 5-4 victory. The last time UTRGV beat Texas A&M Kingsville came back on January 31, 2016 when they got the 6-1 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

UTRGV currently has eight student-athletes on the roster representing seven different countries, including the Macedonia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, India, Germany and Denmark.
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on February 2 when they head to Arlington to face the University of Texas at Arlington at 10 a.m.
