SAN JOSE, Calif. – A pair of early goals helped The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team to a Division I program record 12
th win after defeating San Jose State University 2-1 on Sunday at Spartan Soccer Complex.
The 12 wins surpasses the previous Division I program record of 11 wins from the 1992 season. UTRGV continues to hold on to the No. 2 spot in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
Juniors
Kyle Edwards and
William Akio scored goals in the first 10 minutes of the match to lead UTRGV (12-5-0, 7-3-0 WAC). Edwards scored his 11
th goal of the season just 1:14 into the match as he took the pass from senior
Antone Jarvis and got it past San Jose State goalie Alex Clewis (7-7-2).
The 11 goals by Edwards is the second most goals scored in a single season in Division I program history.
Akio added to UTRGV's lead with a goal at 7:19 as he took the pass from senior
Rooby Dalusma for his fourth goal of the season.
Junior
Andy Rios (9-4) made the lead stand up after facing three shots on goal and making two saves.
San Jose State (7-8-2, 5-4-1 WAC) got their lone goal on an own goal scored by UTRGV.
UTRGV was out shot 16 to 11 but outshot San Jose State 9 to 3 on goal.
UTRGV will return home for the regular season finale when it hosts Incarnate Word on Saturday, November 3 at the UTRGV Soccer & Track and Field Complex at 7 p.m.
