Early Goals Help Men's Soccer to Program Record 12th Win

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A pair of early goals helped The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team to a Division I program record 12th win after defeating San Jose State University 2-1 on Sunday at Spartan Soccer Complex.

The 12 wins surpasses the previous Division I program record of 11 wins from the 1992 season. UTRGV continues to hold on to the No. 2 spot in the Western Athletic Conference standings.

Juniors Kyle Edwards and William Akio scored goals in the first 10 minutes of the match to lead UTRGV (12-5-0, 7-3-0 WAC). Edwards scored his 11th goal of the season just 1:14 into the match as he took the pass from senior Antone Jarvis and got it past San Jose State goalie Alex Clewis (7-7-2).

The 11 goals by Edwards is the second most goals scored in a single season in Division I program history.

Akio added to UTRGV's lead with a goal at 7:19 as he took the pass from senior Rooby Dalusma for his fourth goal of the season.

Junior Andy Rios (9-4) made the lead stand up after facing three shots on goal and making two saves.

San Jose State (7-8-2, 5-4-1 WAC) got their lone goal on an own goal scored by UTRGV.
