EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team won its NCAA Division I program record-tying fourth-straight home match, 3-0 over Kansas City on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (7-4-0, 2-2-0 WAC) is now 4-1-0 at home, tying the NCAA Division I program record for most home wins previously accomplished in 1991 and 1989, when the team went 4-1-0 as well. UTRGV has four home matches remaining. UTRGV last won four-straight home matches in 1989.
Junior
Kyle Edwards recorded his first-career multi-goal match with goals in the 27
th and 60
th minutes. Edwards now has a team-high six goals and 15 points this season. Junior
William Akio assisted on the first goal, his fifth assist of the season, while senior
Robby Dalusma notched his first point with an assist on the second goal.
UTRGV applied sustained pressure over the first nine minutes, leading to the game-winning goal at 8:21, when a ricochet from graduate student
Matt Beaulaurier landed at the feet of senior
Jaakko Hietikko, who scored his second goal of the season. It was Beaulaurier's second assist.
Freshman
Trevor Schneider (2-1-0) posted his second shutout.
UTRGV outshot Kansas City (2-8-0, 1-3-0 WAC) 8-6, including 4-1 on goal.
UTRGV hosts Houston Baptist on Super Saver Sunday at 7 p.m. Any fans bringing five non-perishable food items will receive free admission. All donations benefit the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. Gates open at 6.
