EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team won its NCAA Division I program record fifth home match, 2-1 over Houston Baptist University (HBU) on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (8-4-0, 3-2-0 WAC) is now 5-1-0 at home, breaking the NCAA Division I program record for most home wins previously accomplished in 1991 and 1989, when the team went 4-1-0. UTRGV has three home matches remaining. UTRGV has now won five-straight home matches for the first time in NCAA Division I program history.
Now with eight wins, UTRGV has its highest NCAA Division I program win total since the 1992 team went 11-2-0. UTRGV, which went 7-7-3 last season, has at least six matches remaining.
Sophomore
Bryce Box recorded a career-high three points, assisting on the game-winning goal in the 50
thminute and then adding a goal of his own in the 56
thminute.
Senior
Rooby Dalusma scored his first goal, the game-winner, when he, junior
William Akio and Box came in from the left. Box touched the ball to Akio, who sent it into the box to Dalusma, who found the left corner of the net.
Six minutes later, Box fired a one-timer from the top of the box off initial passes by Akio and junior
Angel Lopez to put UTRGV up 2-0.
This was Akio's second multi-assist match. He now has a team-high seven assists.
HBU (4-4-3, 2-2-1 WAC) got on the board in the 61
stminute when
Dominick Faletto headed home a pass from
Tim Watson.
That was it against
Jorge Cabrera (4-4-2), who made nine saves.
Freshman
Trevor Schneider (3-1-0) made one save for UTRGV.
UTRGV outshot HBU 15-9, including 11-2 on goal.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 9 p.m. at Grand Canyon.
