PHOENIX, Ariz. – Freshman
Emily Zapata recorded her second multi-goal match of the season leading The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team past Grand Canyon University (GCU) 3-0 on Friday at GCU Stadium.
UTRGV (8-5-1, 2-1 WAC) grabbed the early lead as Zapata took the pass from junior
Diana Ansah and scored her eighth goal of the season just 12:38 into the match. That proved to be the game-winner, which is her fifth of the season setting a new single season program record. She broke teammates
Sarah Bonney'sprevious record of four that was set in 2017.
Redshirt freshman
Maile Lunardi (2-0) made that first goal of the match hold up recording a career-high tying six saves for her first-career shutout.
Ansah padded UTRGV's lead with her second goal of the season. At the 81:04 mark, Ansah took a long shot outside the box and getting past GCU goalie
Abby Burton (4-10) making it 2-0.
Just 59 seconds later, Zapata put the final touches in the match with her second goal of the match and her ninth of the season as she converted with an assist from junior
Lea Kalmbach.
UTRGV outshot GCU (4-10, 1-1 WAC) 12-11 in the match while both teams put six shots on goal.
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday when it travels to Bakersfield, California to face CSU Bakersfield at 3 p.m.
