BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team won its third straight match with a 3-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at Main Soccer Field.
UTRGV (9-5-1, 3-1 WAC) scored three goals for the third straight match as it answered back from a CSU Bakersfield (4-9-0, 1-3-0 WAC) goal by Sabrina Delgado at 7:33 into the match.
Freshman
Emily Zapata tied things up at 1-1 with her 10
th goal of the season. Zapata took the pass from senior
Kelzy Jepsen and lobbed over CSU Bakersfield's goalie Cass Tymchen (4-9) at 27:12. Her 10 goals on the season are the second most in a single season in program history.
The match stayed tied for much of the second half before sophomore
Jada MacLean gave UTRGV the 2-1 lead with her second goal of the season at the 82:25 mark.
Minutes later, sophomore
Gina Steiner put the match away with her second goal of the season making it 3-1.
Redshirt freshman
Maile Lunardi (3-0) made four saves in the match with three of those saves coming in the second half.
UTRGV outshot CSU Bakersfield 18-13 and 10-5 on goal.
UTRGV will return to the pitch on Sunday, October 14, when it hosts Seattle U at 1 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. It will be a Super Saver Sunday where any fans bringing five non-perishable food items will receive free admission.
