Women's Basketball Drops Showdown Matchup to Corpus Christi

EDINBURG 
– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball fell 59-49 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its first matchup in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Combined with tonight's men's basketball's 76-69 road win, UTRGV (1-1) now leads Corpus Christi (2-0) 17.5-to-4.5 in the showdown standings.
 
Redshirt sophomore Amara Graham led UTRGV with 13 points while also grabbing four rebounds, dishing out three assists and recording two steals. Senior Krisynthia Sampson added eight points with seven rebounds on the night. 
 
Corpus Christi's Alexes Bryant led all scorers with 15 points while Dae Dae Evans added nine points. 
 
Corpus Christi jumped out to the 11-2 lead in the first quarter after Bryant converted a three-point play by knocking down the free throw at the 5:30 mark. UTRGV answered with a 13-2 run to close out the quarter as Graham made a pair of free throws giving them the 15-13 lead.
 
The second quarter was tight all the way through as Corpus Christi came out on a 9-1 run to take the 22-16 lead after a layup by Emma Young. Junior Makaela Mosley knocked down a pair of free throws to get UTRGV within two at 25-23 with just over two minutes left in the second quarter. Sampson put in a layup to tie the game at 25 but a three-pointer by Makinna Serrata gave Corpus Christi the 28-25 lead at the half.
 
Senior Idil Türk knocked down a three-pointer after a layup by junior Megan Johnson to give UTRGV the 30-28 lead. Corpus Christi rallied with an 10-1 run to give them the 38-31 lead after a fast break layup by Evans forced a timeout. 
 
UTRGV answered with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game at 38 but Corpus Christi closed out the third with a 5-1 run to take the lead for good. UTRGV got within six after a layup by Türk but Corpus Christi put the game away. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it heads to San Antonio to face UTSA for its first road game of the season.
 
The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. when men's basketball hosts Corpus Christi at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
