Women's Basketball Falls at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball fell 61-58 to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in its first road game of the season on Wednesday at the Convocation Center.
 
Redshirt senior Madison Northcutt led UTRGV (1-2) with her first double-double of the season after scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior Idil Türk added 12 points while junior Megan Johnson chipped in with 10 points.
 
UTSA (2-2) got a game-high 19 points from Marie Benson with six rebounds. Karrington Donald added 13 points with five assists and Ryann Stearns posted 10 points with four rebounds and a couple of blocks. 
 
UTSA jumped out to a 9-3 lead after Tija Hawkins knocked down a pair of free throws. UTRGV answered with a 7-2 run to get within 11-10 after Johnson knocked down a jumper with 2:31 left in the first quarter. UTSA closed out the quarter with five straight points to take the 16-10 lead.
 
UTRGV got off to a 9-2 run to open the second quarter as Northcutt made a layup to take the 19-18 lead with 5:58 in the half. UTSA quickly answered with a three-pointer from Stearns before pushing their lead to 29-25 at the half.
 
Junior Amara Graham opened the scoring in the second half with a fast break layup. Later in the quarter, Turk hit a three-pointer and a layup to give UTRGV the 36-34 lead with 5:03 left in the quarter. After UTSA hit a couple of buckets to take the 38-36 lead, UTRGV got a three-pointer from senior Krisynthia Sampson and then she added a layup to take the 41-38 lead. 
 
After heading into the fourth quarter tied 43-43, UTRGV opened the quarter with a layup before Donald hit a three-pointer to retake the lead at 46-45. UTSA took its biggest lead of the quarter at 55-51 after Stearns made a layup but UTRGV answered with a 5-0 run to grab the 56-55 lead after a Graham jumper.
 
Benson then gave UTSA the lead once again with a jumper before UTRGV took the lead for the last time after a jumper from Turk with 41 seconds left making it 58-57. UTSA got a bucket from Benson and a couple of free throws from Timea Toth to close out the game.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday November 17 when it continues its road trip at Canisius at 12 p.m.
