SEATTLE, Wash. – The second-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team saw its run in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament come to an end in the semifinals with a 1-0 loss to No. 6 San Jose State University on Friday at Championship Field.
UTRGV (14-6-0) and San Jose State (8-9-3) battled through the first half as they took a scoreless match into halftime. Both teams finished the first 45 minutes with one shot on goal.
The scoreless match continued into the second half before San Jose State's
Omar Lemusscored a goal to give San Jose State the 1-0 lead at the 79:02 mark.
UTRGV finished with four shots on goal but it was
Rodrigo Reyes-Zavala (1-1) who made the one goal stand with four saves with a pair coming in the final minutes.
Junior
Andy Rios(11-5) also recorded four saves.
UTRGV outshot San Jose State 11 to 7 with four of those shots on goal.
UTRGV finished the season with a Division I program record 14 wins and will find out if it is one of the 24 at-large selections for the NCAA Tournament with the selection show on Monday at 1 p.m.
