Women's Basketball Falls at No. 23 Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell 84-61 to No. 23 Texas A&M University on Saturday at Reed Arena.

UTRGV (6-6) had three players in double-figure scoring led by senior Jameka Dowell with a season-high 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Senior Idil Türk added 11 points while senior Quynne Huggins chipped in 10 points with five rebounds.

Kayla Wells led a trio of Texas A&M (11-2) players in double-figure scoring with 21 points. Ciera Johnson recorded a double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds while Jada Walton added 14 points.

Texas A&M opened with back-to-back baskets but UTRGV responded with a pair of its own after Dowell and Huggins converted on a jumper and a layup. Texas A&M then answered with a 10-1 run to take the 14-5 lead with 5:05 left in the first quarter.

UTRGV got three-pointers from sophomore Valeria Tapia and Turk to get within 14-11 but Texas A&M took the 18-11 lead at the end of the first with back-to-back buckets.

A three-pointer by Texas A&M's Kayla Wells to start the second quarter gave them the 21-11 lead but a three-pointer from Huggins and a jumper from graduate student Madison Northcutt got UTRGV within five at 21-16 with 8:50 left in the first half.

After a jumper by Johnson, junior Amara Graham knocked down a three-pointer to get UTRGV within four at 23-19. That would be the closest UTRGV would get as Texas A&M opened up the scoring with a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 33-22 before taking the 45-30 lead into halftime.

UTRGV opened the second half with a 6-2 run to get within 47-36 after free throws and a layup by Dowell and a layup by Türk with 5:16 left to play in the third quarter. Texas A&M answered as they closed out the quarter with a 13-4 run to extend its lead to 60-40.

Texas A&M got the first two buckets of the fourth quarter but UTRGV went on a 7-0 run after a three-pointer by Türk, another layup by Dowell, and a layup Türk that made it 65-47 but Texas A&M answered with a 10-3 run of their own to keep UTRGV at bay.

UTRGV will be back in action on Monday in its final game of 2018 when it faces No. 4 Baylor at 12 p.m. in Waco.
