EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team remained perfect at home after defeating the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) 5-2 on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (5-5) went the distance in doubles with Incarnate Word (0-6) as the teams split the first two courts. The duo junior Doris Aleksovska and senior Dominque Esparza got things started with a 6-1 win over Sara Djurdjevic and Rachel Sadiq on court two.
 
After UIW got a win on court three to even up doubles, the team of juniors Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Matea Zemunik and Victoria Kareh on court one.
 
In singles, UIW tied the match at one point apiece with a win on court one but Ibarra answered back quickly with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kareh on court three that made it 2-1 UTRGV.
 
Freshman Lasya Patnaik pushed UTRGV's lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sadiq on court six and then it was Aleksovska who put the match away with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alejandra Landaluce on court five.
 
UIW picked up a point on court two but it was junior Anastasia Belyaeva closing out the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Djurdjevic on court four.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Tuesday, February 27 when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 2 p.m. as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
