EDINBURG – Junior
Trevelle Hill pitched eight strong innings as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team fell to No. 3 Texas Tech 3-1 on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,174.
The three runs allowed by UTRGV (5-4) tied for the fewest Texas Tech (9-0) has scored in a game this season while the two-run margin ties for the closest game Texas Tech has played. Texas Tech entered the game having scored an average of 9.9 runs per game and winning by an average margin of 7.4 runs.
Hill (1-1) racked up a career-high six strikeouts in his career-high eight innings, allowing nine hits and one walk.
Texas Tech scored all of its runs on one of Hill's 111 pitches, as
Michael Davis hit a three-run home run over the left field wall in the second. Hill threw 78 of his pitches for strikes (70.3 percent).
Hill got stronger as the game went on, allowing just two hits while striking out four over his final five innings.
UTRGV scored its lone run against
Ryan Shetter (1-0) in the first. Sophomore
Coleman Grubbs led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a one-out single by senior
Ivan Estrella, who finished 2-for-4.
Shetter scattered five hits while striking out eight in 5.1 innings.
Caleb Freeman pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
UTRGV opens up a three-game series at Lamar on Friday at 6 p.m.
