EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team fell to Maine 7-5 in 10 innings in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV (8-7) trailed 5-4 entering the ninth. Sophomore
Coleman Grubbs led off the inning with a strikeout, but reached on a passed ball and moved to second on a throwing error.
Nick Silva (1-2) bounced back to get the next two outs before senior
Austin Siener singled up the middle to tie the game.
That was it against Silva, who struck out nine while scattering five hits in five innings.
In the 10
th, Maine (4-9) put runners at second and third with one out against junior Brownsville Veteran alum
Luis Acosta (0-2), setting up a go-ahead single by
Colin Ridley. Two batters later,
Kevin Doody drew a bases loaded walk to force-in a run.
Acosta struck out six while allowing five hits and three walks in four innings.
Cody Laweryson pitched a scoreless 10
th for his first save.
Senior PSJA alum
Jorge Flores retired the first eight hitters he faced and didn't allow a hit until the fourth.
In the meantime, UTRGV built a 4-0 lead on a first inning bases loaded walk by sophomore
Tyler Torres and a second inning three-run home run by senior
Ivan Estrella.
Siener, Estrella and sophomore Mercedes alum
Matthew Mendoza all finished with two hits. Siener and Mendoza each drew a walk as well.
In the sixth, however, Maine broke through with five runs (two earned) on four hits and one error.
Jonathan Bennett drove in a run with a groundout,
Hernen Sardinas hit an RBI-single, and
Danny Casals hit a two-run double to tie the game. Two wild pitches brought home Casals to give Maine the lead.
Game two of the doubleheader gets underway at approximately 7:05 p.m.
