EDINBURG – Senior PSJA alum
Jorge Flores scattered five hits over a career-high seven innings to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team past Eastern Michigan University (EMU) 6-3 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Flores (2-1) struck out five and walked two, throwing 61 of his 97 pitches (62.9 percent) for strikes.
EMU (5-12) scored its lone run against Flores in the sixth on a
Zachary Owings sacrifice fly.
UTRGV (12-8) was led offensively by sophomores
Tyler Torres and
Elijah Alexander, who each went 2-for-4. Torres had a home run and two RBI while Alexander hit a triple and scored twice.
Alexander led off the fourth with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior
Austin Siener.
Then, in the sixth, Alexander hit a leadoff triple against
Mitchell Sparks (3-1) and scored on a double by senior
Ivan Estrella. One out later, junior
Anthony Gomez hit an RBI-double and sophomore
Tyler Torres came up with an RBI-single to put UTRGV ahead 4-1.
UTRGV extended its lead to 5-1 in the seventh on an RBI-single by sophomore
Coleman Grubbs.
EMU got two back in the eighth on RBI-singles by Owings and
Eli Gora.
Torres then launched his second home run of the season in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Junior Nikki Rowe alum
Ryan Jackson struck out two in a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
UTRGV and EMU wrap up this three-game series with game two of the doubleheader at 5 p.m.
