EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team is set to face Grand Canyon University on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in its second Western Athletic Conference match of the season.
WAC Cluster Schedule
The complete schedule is as follows:
Friday: Grand Canyon vs Chicago state at 9 a.m., UTRGV vs UMKC at 1 p.m.
Saturday: New Mexico State vs Chicago State at 9 a.m., UTRGV vs Grand Canyon at 1 p.m., and Seattle U vs UMKC at 4 p.m.
Sunday: Grand Canyon vs New Mexico State at 9 a.m., UTRGV vs Seattle U at 1 p.m., and Chicago State vs UMKC at 4 p.m.
All matches will be played at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (8-8) picked up a 4-3 victory over UMKC to open WAC play. The win improved UTRGV to 7-0 at home this season.
UTRGV swept through singles to grab the 1-0 lead.
Anastasia Belyaeva got things rolling in singles picking up the 6-4, 6-0 win on court four.
Dominique Ibarra quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court three.
Doris Aleksovska clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court five.
Scouting Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon is 6-10 after opening WAC play with a 7-0 victory over Chicago State on Friday.
With the win over Chicago State, Grand Canyon snapped its two-match losing streak.
In singles, Grand Canyon is 37-53 in dual match play. Kylie Waschuk leads the team with a 10-4 record while Emilia Occhipinti has won eight singles matches and Celina Buhr has won seven.
In doubles, Grand Canyon is 15-25 with a pair of teams posting five wins. Martina Lo Pumo and Autumn Prudhomme are 5-6 while Occhipinti and Lana Rinaldi are also 5-6.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 0-4 against Grand Canyon in a series that dates back to 2014.
Both of these teams met up last year and it was Grand Canyon who came away with the 4-3 victory in Kansas City.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has eight student-athletes on the roster representing seven different countries, including the Macedonia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, India, Germany and Denmark.
