Women’s Tennis Closes Out First WAC Cluster Against Seattle U Sunday

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team closes out the first Western Athletic Conference cluster when it faces Seattle University on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
WAC Cluster Schedule
The schedule for Sunday is as follows:
 
Sunday: Grand Canyon vs New Mexico State at 9 a.m., UTRGV vs Seattle U at 1 p.m., and Chicago State vs UMKC at 4 p.m.
 
All matches will be played at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (9-8) won its second straight WAC match and its eighth win at home after defeating Grand Canyon 5-2 on Saturday.
 
 UTRGV took the early lead after winning two doubles matches. Dominique Esparza and Doris Aleksovska won on court two to get things started. Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra then clinched the point with a win on court one.
 
In singles, Grand Canyon opened with a win on court two before Ibarra won on court three.
 
Anastasia Belyaeva then pushed UTRGV's lead to 3-1 after a win on court four and then Esparza clinched the win with a straight set victory on court one.
 
Lasya Patnaik closed out the match with a win on court six.
 
Scouting Seattle U
Seattle U is 6-10 on the season after falling 0-7 to UMKC on Saturday.
 
Seattle U is on a two-match losing streak after also losing to Washington back on March 17.
 
Seattle U has won matches against Cal State Stanislaus, Montana State, Lewis-Clark State College, North Dakota, Northern Colorado, and Illinois State.
 
In singles, Seattle U is 38-53 with Kyra Jung leads the way with eight singles victories while Michelle Lui has recorded seven victories this season.
 
Seattle U has posted a 19-24 record in doubles with Lui and Kelli Woodman leading the team with six victories. Jung and Hannah Gianan have also posted a 4-6 record for the second most doubles wins.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 4-2 all-time against Seattle U in a series that dates back to 2009.
 
Both these teams met up last year and it was UTRGV who came away with the 5-2 victory in Las Cruces.
 
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has eight student-athletes on the roster representing seven different countries, including the Macedonia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, India, Germany and Denmark.
 
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on March 30 when it hosts Laredo Community College at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
