Baseball Records First-Ever Road Win Over Pac-12 Opponent by Upsetting Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team recorded its first-ever road victory over a Pac-12 opponent by knocking off Washington, the No. 64 ranked team in the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), 5-3 on Monday at Husky Ballpark.

UTRGV (20-21) had previously been 0-5 against Pac-12 institutions on the road, falling at Oregon State twice in 2006 and getting swept by Arizona in 2004.

This is UTRGV's first victory over a Pac-12 institution since Feb. 25, 2016, when UTRGV beat Washington State 3-1 at home.

UTRGV is now 6-10 all-time against the Pac-12.

Senior Ivan Estrella reached four times for UTRGV, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two walks.

Estrella gave UTRGV a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI-double. He then capped a four-run seventh with a two-run home run off Alex Hardy(3-1). The seventh inning scoring also included a sacrifice fly by sophomore Elijah Alexander and a game-tying double by sophomore Coleman Grubbs.

That made a winner of junior Trevelle Hill (4-3), who struck out five in six innings while allowing three runs on four hits and two walks.

Junior McAllen Memorial alum Juan Carreon II pitched two hitless innings for his second save.

Washington (18-18) scored in each of the first three innings, as Willie MacIver hit an RBI-single in the first, Mason Cerrillo hit an RBI-double in the second, and MacIver hit a solo home run in the third.

UTRGV opens up a four-game home stand with the first of three against Sacramento State on Friday at 7 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium for Kids Club Appreciation Night. Members of the spring UTRGV Athletics Kids Club will be recognized on the field before the game with the UTRGV baseball team. They will also take a commemorative group photo. Gates open at 6.
