Track & Field Set to Host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Dual Meet Saturday

EDINBURG– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's and women's track and field teams will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a dual meet, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Last Time Out
UTRGV last competed at the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational, and the Raleigh Relays where it closed out the weekend with a pair of program records.
 
Paul May, who set the program record in the indoor shot put, set the program record in the outdoor shot put at the Bobcat Invitational with a throw of 17.21 meters as he finished in second place. His throw broke J.C. Crosby's record of 16.77 meters that was set back in 2005.
Idatonye Cheetham-West set the program record in the 200-meter dash after running a time of 23.98 seconds as she finished in fourth place. The time broke teammates JoVanna Jones' record that was set earlier this year.
 
Abraham Chirchir competed at the Raleigh Relays where he ran the 10,000-Meter Run. Chirchir posted a time of 29:36.39 to finish in 20thplace out of 103 runners. His time ranks him second fastest in program history.
 
Chirchir Adds Another Athlete of the Week to Accolades
Chirchir earned his second WAC Track & Field Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Raleigh Relays.
 
His time of 29:36.39 would have qualified him for the NCAA Regional Meet last year and it is currently 56thin the nation and 35thin the region. It is also the best time in the Western Athletic Conference. 
 
South Texas Showdown, Presented Navy Army Community Credit Union
UTRGV trails Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the standings 20.5 points to 25.5 points.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has won the last three events with four points up for grabs this weekend. 
 
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action as it heads to San Antonio for the UIW Invitational on April 13.
